Michigan Collaborative Recognized for Advancing Prostate Cancer Care
The Michigan Urological Surgery Improvement Collaborative (MUSIC) recently earned a Best of Blue Clinical Distinction Award from the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association. MUSIC was selected from more than 30 entries from Blues plans across the nation to receive the top honor for clinical programs that improve quality and outcomes.
The collaborative has achieved meaningful results since its 2012 launch, including:
- A statewide decrease in the use of both bone scans and CT scans
- A 50 percent reduction in prostate biopsy-related hospitalizations, achieved by implementing a process change to address antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
- Implementation of an electronic infrastructure for measuring, and ultimately improving, functional outcomes after radical prostatectomy.
The MUSIC collaborative is unique in that several prostate cancer survivors participate as part of the consortium. The patients provide additional perspective that adds to the discussion and data review. Cancer survivor and MUSIC participant Bill Crooks shares his experience here.
