The Michigan Surgical Quality Collaborative (MSQC) is a group of community, academic, rural and urban Michigan hospitals seeking to measure and improve the care of surgical patients throughout the state.

Today, an estimated 2 to 5 percent of all surgical patients in the U.S. develop infections. The cost in both human and economic terms is significant: surgical site infections increase the length of stay in the hospital by an average of 7.5 days, at an estimated cost of $130 million to $845 million per year in the U.S. The good news is that by using evidence-based processes of care and redesigning systems to reduce risk factors, the incidence of SSI can be dramatically reduced.

The MSQC strives to evaluate and improve the quality of general and vascular surgery in Michigan. The initiative uses the surgical reporting system from the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program, which produces standardized, audited and risk-adjusted data.

The MSQC was created through funding from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network. This funding significantly reduces barriers for Michigan surgeons and hospitals wishing to participate in — and benefit from — the program.

Goals

  • Evaluate and improve the quality of general, vascular and multispecialty surgical practices.
  • Reduce health care costs.

Results

  • 10 percent reduction in mortality rates
  • 37 percent reduction in complications following surgery
  • 18 percent reduction in surgical site infection
Michigan is outperforming national improvements in surgical outcomes, including complications and surgical site infections.
