The Michigan Trauma Quality Improvement Program, launched in January 2011, addresses inconsistencies and variations in patient outcomes related to trauma care.

Currently, individual trauma centers receive minimal feedback on risk-adjusted outcomes, despite the implementation of state and county trauma systems in some areas and the use of trauma registries. Efforts to provide mortality and morbidity rate benchmarking to trauma centers have been hindered by:

  • Lack of complete, reliable data collection with standardized definitions to measure trauma care quality
  • Limited ability to translate data into a meaningful assessment of existing systems and processes of care to determine best practices

MTQIP intends to address these deficits.

This initiative includes all interested American College of Surgeons verified trauma centers within Michigan. MTQIP partnered with the recently launched American College of Surgeons Trauma Quality Improvement Program (ACS-TQIP) at the national level. Currently, 10 of the 14 participating sites are enrolled in TQIP; the others will be eligible in January 2012.

Goals

  • Add eight more trauma centers in Michigan by Jan. 1, 2012.
  • Create a statewide quality improvement infrastructure for trauma centers that endeavors to improve the quality of care for trauma patients and reduce the costs of care.
  • Utilize the existing trauma registry system at each participating hospital to build a sustainable and cost-efficient system to track patient outcomes with data standardization.
  • Enroll each participating hospital in the American College of Surgeons Trauma Quality Improvement Program.
  • Collaborate with the trauma medical directors and care providers at each participating hospital to identify and share best practices.
  • Create a system of providers, consumers and payers that uses comparative effectiveness to improve care for trauma patients.
