Peripheral vascular disease of the lower extremities affects up to 10 million people, mostly men and women older than age 50, in the United States.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Cardiovascular Consortium, Peripheral Vascular Intervention (BMC2-PVI) is an expansion of the groundbreaking Angioplasty initiative. BMC2-PVI was developed to decrease complications and improve medical therapy for patients with severe peripheral arterial disease who undergo peripheral vascular intervention. The BMC2-PVI initiative is a prospective, multicenter, multidisciplinary registry that represents a regional collaborative effort involving interventional radiologists, vascular surgeons and interventional cardiologists to improve quality of care and patient outcomes. The registry has collected information, from 16 participating hospitals, for approximately 10,000 interventional cases since its inception 2000.
Goals
- Reduce blood transfusions after percutaneous arterial intervention.
- Increase utilization of recommended medical therapy that's been demonstrated to decrease risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality especially for at-risk populations.
Results
- Decreased post-PVI blood transfusions by 7.2 percent
- Significant improvement in the use of essential medical therapies, including anti-platelet and statin medications among physicians at participating sites
