Among Michigan women, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths and is the most-frequently diagnosed cancer, according to the Michigan Department of Community Health1.

In an effort to improve the quality and safety of breast cancer treatment, the Michigan Breast Oncology Initiative (MiBOQI) was launched in 2006. This is the first statewide effort to examine practice patterns in surgical, radiation and medical oncology to improve breast cancer treatment and outcomes. This initiative is helping hospitals and associated medical practices compare treatment methods with nationally accepted treatment guidelines.

Located at the University of Michigan, the study's Coordinating Center is helping hospitals and associated medical practices compare treatment methods with accepted National Comprehensive Cancer Network treatment guidelines.

Goals

  • Improve breast cancer treatment and outcomes.
  • Assist hospitals and associated medical practices as they compare treatment methods with nationally accepted guidelines.

Results

Quantitative results are not yet available. Information on the process measures (such as time from abnormal mammogram to biopsy and time from positive biopsy to start of treatment time) has been shared with participating hospitals. These measures are expected to have a significant impact on patient satisfaction and outcomes.
