Nancy J. O. Birkmeyer, Ph.D.

Dr. Nancy J. O. Birkmeyer received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Massachusetts–Amherst, a Master of Science degree in Epidemiology, a fellowship in the Epidemiology of Cardiovascular Disease at Harvard and was the first graduate of the Ph.D. program at Dartmouth's Center for the Evaluative Clinical Sciences. Her dissertation work focused on issues related to outcomes and clinical decision making for patients undergoing aortic valve replacement. While a faculty member at the Department of Surgery at Dartmouth Medical School, Dr. Birkmeyer worked with the Northern New England Cardiovascular Disease Research Group and the Spine Patients Outcomes Research Trial on the design and conduct of epidemiologic and outcomes studies for evaluating treatments and improving care in cardiovascular and musculoskeletal surgery. In her current role as the associate director of M-SCORE, Dr. Birkmeyer is working on evaluating surgical treatments and quality of care in cancer, obesity and cardiovascular diseases.
John D. Birkmeyer, M.D.

John D. Birkmeyer, M.D., professor of Surgery, is a member of the Division of Minimally Invasive Surgery. He received his bachelor's degree at Boston College and his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. Dr. Birkmeyer completed his general surgery residency and a fellowship in Medical Informatics at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. He then joined the Dartmouth faculty, later serving as chief of the Section of General Surgery. He joined the University of Michigan faculty as the George D. Zuidema Professor and Chair of Surgical Outcomes Research.
Dr. Birkmeyer specializes in advanced laparoscopy, including surgery for gastroesophageal reflux, gallbladder disease, and abdominal wall and groin hernias. His expertise also includes surgery for severe obesity. In 2005, he became director of Bariatric Surgery at the University of Michigan.
Dr. Birkmeyer is a national leader in surgical outcomes research, quality, and health policy. He has a long record of research funding by the National Institutes of Health and the Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality. He has served in advisory roles for the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Institute of Medicine, the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program, and the Leapfrog Group, a large coalition of health care purchasers. Dr. Birkmeyer is director of the Michigan Surgical Collaborative for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (M-SCORE) center at the University of Michigan.
Amanda O'Reilly, R.N.
Clinical Nurse Project Manager, Michigan Bariatric Surgery Collaborative
Amanda O'Reilly received her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Michigan. Since completing her education, O'Reilly has worked on a post-surgical floor, which included urology, gastrointestinal and transplant patients, at University of Michigan hospital. As the clinical nurse project manager for M-SCORE, O'Reily is currently involved in measuring and improving the quality of care for the Michigan Bariatric Surgery Collaborative, which is a statewide registry. Her responsibilities include reviewing the accuracy of submitted data, performing site audits and providing collaboration between the sites.
Andrea Machovic Osborne, M.S.
Project Coordinator, Michigan Bariatric Surgery Collaborative
Andrea Machovic Osborne, received her Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology from the University of New Hampshire and her Master of Science degree from Dartmouth Medical School's Center for the Evaluative Clinical Sciences. Since completing her education, Osborne worked for the Veteran's Affairs National Center for Patient Safety field office in White River Junction, Vermont. In 2005, she joined Drs. Nancy and John Birkmeyer as a project manager for M-SCORE. She assisted in the development of the Michigan Bariatric Surgery Collaborative and continues to manage the regulatory affairs and contracts for MBSC.
About the Coordinating Center
The University of Michigan serves as the Coordinating Center and is responsible for collecting and analyzing comprehensive clinical data from the participating hospitals. It uses these analyses to examine practice patterns, generate new knowledge linking processes of care to outcomes and identify best practices and opportunities for quality and efficiency improvement. The Center further supports participants in establishing quality improvement goals and assists them in implementing best practices.
